About MITPP

Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

ABOUT MITPP

The Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (MITPP) offers affordable contemporary certificate programs in Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy to individuals licensed or certified in social work, psychology, psychiatry or psychiatric nursing, and to those working toward such credentials. Counselors and others who hold a Master’s degree can train to qualify as Licensed Psychoanalysts under New York State licensure laws. In this specialized training you will develop expertise through hands-on experience in a professional setting doing work that is richly rewarding.

MITPP’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion across race, age, gender identity, physical ability, ethnicity and experience has been a priority since its inception.

With additional clinical work, training at MITPP enables social workers to qualify for the LCSW: MITPP’s Earn and Learn - LCSW Track Program offers candidates the opportunity to obtain the LCSW either part time (10 clinical hours weekly over 6 years) or full time (14 clinical hours weekly or more over 3 years.) Full time candidates in this track can be paid for their clinical work.

The Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (MITPP) provides training in psychoanalytic theory, technique, and clinical practice to qualified candidates in the mental health professions. The training leads to a Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. MITPP also offers Clinical Training in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, a two-year program leading to a certificate of completion in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. MITPP is a not-for-profit corporation organized in 1980 and operating under an absolute charter from the New York State Board of Regents. All MITPP candidates are provided with individual supervision throughout their training. Candidates who successfully meet course and attendance requirements will be awarded CEUs.

Both the adult program and the child/adolescent program candidates are actively engaged in the treatment of patients throughout their training. Through an arrangement with the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health (MCMH), subject to the approval of MCMH's Director of Clinical Services, MITPP candidates are assigned MCMH patients for treatment to satisfy their clinical requirements and must attend group supervision under the auspices of MCMH. Candidates may not satisfy MITPP's clinical requirements either by treating patients in private practice or at other agencies. MCMH has been making low cost long term psychoanalytically informed treatment available to community residents since 1962.

MITPP supports research and sponsors scientific programs in conjunction with MCMH and the Metropolitan Society of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (MSPP), whose membership is made up principally of graduates of MITPP's programs.

MITPP does not discriminate in its admission policy on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, age nationality, or disability.

Why MITPP?

MITPP offers remarkably affordable training and provides a collegial atmosphere conducive to learning through its small classes, an environment in which candidates’ concerns are taken seriously by faculty, supervisors and administration, and exposure to a broad range of psychoanalytic thought and contemporary controversies in psychoanalysis. Our highly qualified faculty and supervisory staff are selected for their level of skill and training, and for their sensitivity to the needs of the beginning therapist. The orientation of our faculty and supervisors spans the range of psychoanalytic thinking, exposing candidates to the various perspectives that predominate in the field.

Applicants may apply for either the Fall or Spring semester.
