BISEXUALITY AND ITS VICISSITUDES: A PSYCHOANALYTIC EXPLORATION
SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2024
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
PRESENTER: Román Yumatov, MA, LP, FIPA
In this workshop, we will focus first and foremost on the three interrelated (bio-psycho-social) dimensions of Freud’s original conceptualization of bisexuality: constitutional (biological) bisexuality; psychic (psychosocial) bisexuality, what we nowadays refer to as gender; and bisexual object-choice (psychosexual bisexuality, or bisexual orientation). We will then consider post-Freudian developments, along with related controversies and contributions from psychoanalytic feminist scholars.
Finally, a Freudian/Kleinian model of bisexual states of mind will be proposed as an open and non-pathologizing approach to thinking about various sexed, sexual(ized) and gendered vicissitudes of bisexuality that transcends both the past normative omniscience (i.e. “anatomy is destiny”) and the present omnipotence of identity. Bisexual states of mind will thus be positioned as not only ordinary, but necessary, in both development and psychoanalysis.
This workshop will be based on the following award-winning essay (which will be distributed and should be read prior to the seminar): Yumatov, R. (2017). Bisexuality and its vicissitudes: A psychoanalytic exploration. In Male Sexuality and Gender in Psychoanalysis, 35–87. Saarbrücken, Germany (and worldwide): Lambert Academic Publishing.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will:
1. gain an understanding of Freud’s original bio-psycho-social conceptualization of bisexuality.
2. describe post-Freudian developments and controversies with regard to bisexuality.
3. become familiar with the Freudian/Kleinian model of bisexual states of mind.
PRESENTER: Román Yumatov, MA, LP, FIPA Faculty: Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Adult Program; Institute for Expressive Analysis. Instructor: Study Group on the work of Melanie Klein and her followers and Clinical Seminars. UNORTHODOX: MY LIFE IN AND OUTSIDE PSYCHOANALYSIS, A MEMOIR
SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2024
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
|Presenter: ARNOLD RICHARDS, MD
This memoir describes the relationship between Richards' personal life and professional life inside and outside of psychoanalysis. The influence of his Russian Jewish father, an early Bolshevik who emigrated to America in the 1920s, contributed to his efforts for fairness and inclusion in psychoanalytic training. His independent and original psychoanalytic writings span Contemporary Freudian Conflict Theory, more recent theoretical developments, analysis of psychoanalytic institutions and their histories, and the development of the thought collectives that make up psychoanalysis. His life and its events are a fascinating look at an analyst's self-identity and prolific professional life.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1. describe the development of a psychoanalyst, based on their life from childhood to adulthood, including their professional experiences, that may lead to certain theoretical leanings and activism within and outside the profession.
2. discuss how a psychoanalyst is able to challenge the status quo in a field.
3. identify what compels an author to write a memoir.

Former Editor: Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA); The American Psychoanalyst. Training and Supervising Analyst: New York Psychoanalytic Institute.
